Mobile App Development: Where Is the Starting Point?

Over at Local Search News, my latest column posted. I also did a podcast with LSN’s Steve Espinosa over the weekend that should be available soon. The column has lots of data from our recent mobile ad revenue forecast, but the point is to also raise the question facing lots of companies entering the mobile space: Which platforms should I develop for?

There is lots of fragmentation in platforms, operating systems and devices. SMS currently has the largest reach. But the relatively small (and growing) based of iPhone users has the highest engagement levels. Between them lie a range of options, so where do you apply limited development resources?

This is the jumping off point for a TKG report — I’m spending lots of time talking to carriers, app developers and companies in the local space in order to get some of these questions answered. In the meantime, see Dex’s recent comments on developing mobile apps.
