NAA 2009: Paying Attention to Newspapers (Still)
Next week is the Newspaper Association of America’s Annual Convention in San Diego. I’ll cover Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s keynote on Tuesday, in which he’ll express his support of the newspaper industry despite Google’s very public axing in January of its Print Ads newspaper partnership (the talk is being streamed live at 10 a.m. PDT). Yelp Comes Around to Mobile Reviews
Yelp has had lots of success with its iPhone app, which currently accounts for 5 percent of its overall traffic. This is partly because its base of urban “foodies” maps well to iPhone user bases. This was a smart platform choice — a key issue for small companies given device and OS fragmentation, combined with finite development resources. I spoke with Yelp’s Sonia Survashi McFarland last week about lots of these development issues and am working on a longer report on this topic now. (read more…)
Web 2.0 Expo: Nokia on Growth of Mobile, Social Web
Nokia Executive VP Anssi Vanjoki gave this morning’s keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, explaining the global mobile giant’s vision of the future mobile Web, and why it paid $8 billion for Navteq.Nokia’s influence and positioning in the mobile world is no secret: 1.3 billion of the 4 billion global mobile devices are Nokia. Vanjoki believes the majority of these devices — in both developed and underdeveloped nations — need to evolve into better Web communication devices. (read more…)
Web 2.0 Dispatch: Radio, Television and Newspapers Play Online Game via APIs
A session at the Web 2.0 conference today dug deep into strategies for traditional media companies to use APIs to better distribute their content online. First, what the heck is an API? Standing for application programming interface, it’s a set of tools that content providers let loose on the world, which lets third parties build customized experiences around their content. BIA/Kelsey Expert Commentary: Booth on 2008 IAB Ad Revenue Results
The IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers are out with their semi-annual report on the online ad market. IAB/PWC say that interactive revenues were $23.4 billion for 2008, which is up 10.6 percent from the prior year. But everyone seems to be pointing to ominous signs, since the share of second-half revenues was just 51 percent — the worst showing since 2002. (read more…)
Google’s 10-Pack: Now With More Local
Local SEO guru Andrew Shotland just alerted me to the fact that Google is now serving the local “10 pack” in searches that don’t include geographic modifiers (original discovery by Google Maps expert Mike Blumenthal). For those unfamiliar, the 10 pack is the block of 10 local results that occupies the top results in searches where Google has a high degree of confidence in local intent. Until today, that confidence was based on explicit geographic modifiers (i.e., Pizza, San Francisco). (read more…)

Eniro CEO Karrbrink: ‘This Is a Database Company‘
On a recent visit to Stockholm, we sat down with Eniro President and CEO Jesper Karrbrink, who is managing Eniro through a strategic shift described in a presentation late last year as moving “from print dependence to online opportunity.” In a videotaped interview, Karrbrink insisted that Eniro’s product is its content. Print directories, the Internet, mobile phones and so on are merely “distribution formats” in his view. (read more…)

Techcrunch has a guest post today from Google VP of engineering for mobile Vic Gundotra, which pinpoints the factors that will drive the growth of the mobile Web.
