Bad economic times often make companies more willing to take on risk that they might otherwise not allow. When there is pressure from above to make revenue numbers, and this pressure is constantly applied to the sales force, rule bending and risk taking tend to increase. As Rick mentions, this also can lead to over selling which puts SMBs in over their heads if the program does not deliver as promised or they experience unforeseen financial challenges like increased fixed costs (fuel, labor, etc.).

If local media companies are not diligent in paying attention to this issue, they will certainly be at greater financial risk if they must write off increasing levels of bad debt.

I'm still am scratching my head as to what bending the rules and bad debt and slow pay REALLY says about the total value proposition? Seems like it might get a little distorted and SMEs might get in over their head which then starts the vicious cycle all over again.

Great article. This could be the mini sub prime in the making for the industry. I think the publicly traded Yellow Pages companies will be under great pressure to increase revenue and be in greater risk of high bad debt.
