Yahoo! Earnings and Local Acquisition

I'm in Hotlanta (where there's plenty of evidence of global warming) . . . at the DMA convention on a panel about "marketing to a consumer who is in control." Meanwhile, things keep happening.

Here is today's third-quarter Yahoo! earnings rundown from Reuters' Eric Auchard (Google is up next). Also Yahoo! acquired Whereonearth per John Battelle (and the Yahoo! search blog). More thoughts on this later. For now, see the Reuters general overview.

As serious as the major search engines and portals are about Local, Yahoo! is putting a major effort behind it (it acquired local events/community site Upcoming.org just two weeks ago).
